Ancient Walls of Sorrento: exhibition in Sorrento

Rich in historical and architectural beauties, Sorrento offers its visitors numerous attractions not to be missed during your holiday.

In the month of July 2010, it will be possible for you to visit also the Bastion of Parsano and a part of the Ancient Walls of Sorrento: two suggestive spots of the town of Sorrento. Recently restored and fortified, the two sixteenth-century sites can be admired from top of via Sersale, from Ibsen Park and from Via degli Aranci.

Well-known for their uniqueness and beauty, they give visitors a magical atmosphere at any time of the day, in the morning light or in the warmer and more romantic one of sunset. The Ancient Walls are situated under the road plane of the Parsano Nuova Gate, whose ruins were found out in 1921.

The Ancient Walls remained in defence of the town during all the Middle Ages; they were eventually rebuilt between 1551 and 1561. Well-known also with the name of Viceregal Walls, they were built in rows of tuff protected by plaster and with a horizontal string-course, the Ancient walls of Sorrento kept the route of the Greco-Roman defence walls.

The Ancient Walls of Sorrento are among the very few town walls in Southern Italy dating back to the Vigeregal time.
